Crucial Pre-Academic Brain Skills to
Build in the First 6 Years

The first 6 years of life are marked by a period of remarkable brain growth. The average size of a child’s brain reaches about 90% of adult brain size before the age of five. These early years offer a tremendous opportunity for parents to shape and maximise brain development and lay down the best foundations for future success.

BrainFit® Baby and BrainFit® Junior programmes are specially designed to develop the most important pre-academic cognitive brain skills during these early years. Here are a handful of other examples of these critical pre-academic skills which we aim to develop in your child.

Pre-Academic Skills to be developed between 0-3 years:

Cause & Effect Thinking

This ability underlies intelligence and critical thinking development as your child learns how certain actions lead to specific responses. From 9 months up, BrainFit® develops this skills through manipulation of specially-selected objects and toys that allow little ones to explore the relationship between actions and consequences.

Memory & Attention

BrainFit® Baby develops memory and attention in a structured and expansive manner by exercising recall of information in 16 different modes of presentation, such as sequential memory, pattern memory and spatial memory.

Visual Processing

This includes many important subskills like visual discrimination. By 18 months of age, your baby should be able to match the shadow of an image to the image itself. This skills is important for the accurate perception of visual lines and spatial details, requires for effortless learning of alphabets and Math later in school.

Language Processing

This includes many important subskills like categorisation. By the second year, your toddler should develop the ability to group items into discreet categories. This highly important “grouping” skills accelerates your child’s ability to learn and remember new ideas and concepts, since “grouping” of information expands working memory capacity and accelerates the grasping of new information.

Pre-Academic Skills to be developed between 3-6 years:

Emotional Cognition

These skills contribute to the development of Emotional Intelligence and influence social success. It is reflected in a child’s ability to recognise, manage and regulate their own, as well as others’ emotions successfully. Through a comprehensive social-emotional development programme that includes role-play, social stories and mindfulness exercises, BrainFit® Junior teaches preschoolers about their emotions and how to regulate them. The result is a more confident, happy and resilient child.

Language Cognition

These skills form the bedrock to the development of solid language, reading, comprehension and communication skills. Using powerful programs validated by researchers from Stanford, Harvard and MIT, BrainFit® Junior accelerates speed of auditory processing so that the brain is able to successfully process sounds as short as 15msec in duration. Research has shown that this skill is vital for strong reading and communication skills, as language is one of the fastest task our brain needs to process.

Math Cognition

These skills accelerate the brain’s ability to visualise spatial information, the cornerstone of early Math success. Research has shown that spatial reasoning is a crucial skill to be developed in the early years for Math and learning success. Our preschoolers participate in physical and table-top exercises that accelerate visual-spatial and spatial-numerical processing. We also use Zorbit Math learning app to help children understand Math concepts through exploration of rich Math tasks.
